International Dog Day falls on Wednesday 26 August 2026, an annual occasion to celebrate dogs of all breeds and backgrounds and promote adoption from rescue centres. The day also recognises working dogs and their roles in service, police, military, and rescue settings. Local rescue centres including Bath Cats and Dogs Home, Bristol DAWG, and Teckels in Gloucestershire are all active this month and welcome support.
Teckels Animal Sanctuaries is hosting a rescue-focused Summer Fair and Fun Dog Show at Fromebridge Mill, Whitminster, on 23–24 August 2026. The event features a fun dog show with rosettes and prizes, stalls, refreshments, games and raffles, and is a great opportunity to support a long-running local rescue charity. Dogs and families are welcome across both days of the weekend event.
The Architect pub in Bath is hosting its annual bank holiday charity dog walk in aid of Bath Cats and Dogs Home, starting with a bacon sarnie and brew at the pub before a walk around the canal and Sydney Gardens. A Sunday roast with a dedicated dog menu is available afterwards for those wishing to stay and dine. It is a popular community event combining a scenic city walk with support for a local animal rescue charity.
Dogs Trust and the RSPCA are jointly leading a public consultation on a new Responsible Dog Ownership framework in 2026, partly driven by strong public concern about out-of-control dogs highlighted through the National Dog Survey. The consultation invites dog owners and non-owners alike to help shape guidance on what responsible ownership should look like in modern Britain. The National Dog Survey itself remains open to anyone aged 18 or over in the UK, including those without a dog.
