Blue-Green Algae Peak Season: BVA Reminds Dog Owners to Stay Vigilant

The British Veterinary Association has issued its annual summer warning about the heightened risk of toxic blue-green algae in UK lakes, ponds, and rivers during hot weather. Suspected or confirmed cases reported to vets peak in July and August and are not restricted to any one part of the UK, meaning local walking spots across Bristol and the South West could be affected. Owners are advised to keep dogs on leads near water bodies with confirmed blooms, prevent dogs from drinking from or swimming in affected water, and rinse dogs thoroughly after any outdoor swim. Sightings can be reported via the free Bloomin' Algae app.

Government to Consult on Licensing All Dog Rescue and Rehoming Centres

The UK Government's Animal Welfare Strategy for England, published in December 2025, includes a commitment to launch a public consultation on introducing licensing requirements for rescue and rehoming organisations. Currently, anyone can legally set up a dog rescue operation in England with no mandatory licensing or inspection regime. Welfare groups including Four Paws UK are urging dog owners to engage when the consultation opens, to ensure future standards are built around genuine welfare and accountability.

Urgent Warning to Dog Owners Taking Dogs to UK Beaches This Summer

A vet-issued warning published this week highlights the risk of salt toxicity in dogs after beach visits, with 2026's record-breaking summer heat increasing the danger. Dogs playing or swimming in the sea can unknowingly ingest too much seawater, which can lead to sodium ion poisoning — symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, tremors, and in serious cases seizures and disorientation. Dog owners heading to coastal areas in Somerset, Devon, or South Wales this summer are advised to carry fresh water and watch for early warning signs.
